A bochur was killed after being hit by a garbage truck on the corner of Kingston Avenue and Carroll Street in Crown Heights on Sunday morning.
The victim, who was hit at approximately 9:00 am, has been identified as 25 year old Gedalia Gruntzweig from Vinnitza, Ukraine. He has been learning in the Smicha program in Morristown and was visiting for Shabbos.
Passersby reported that he was crossing Carroll Street with two friends when the accident occurred.
He was in the crosswalk at the time of the accident, and he was run over by the truck.
“The two back tires of the truck ran over him,” Hatzalah member Yingy Bistritzky told VIN News.
While one onlooker reported that the man slipped on ice and fell under the wheels of the oncoming truck, Bistritzky disputed that account saying that while there was ice in the area, there was none at the location where the accident took place.
The victim’s family in the Ukraine has been notified of his death. He was an only child.
Police have ruled the cause of death as head trauma and the man’s body is still on scene as police, who have blocked off surrounding streets, continue their investigation, VIN News reported.
