BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (JTA) — Argentina will build an outdoor monument in Buenos Aires to honor victims of the Holocaust.

President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner met Monday night with a delegation of Argentine Jewish leaders at the national government residence to announce the construction of the monument in Shoah Plaza, a public square inaugurated two years ago. A start date has not yet been set for the construction.

Shoah Plaza is a green space located in Palermo public park in front of the King Fahd Islamic Cultural Center and mosque.

The memorial reportedly would be the first public monument in Latin America to honor Holocaust victims. The city also is home to the Buenos Aires Shoah Museum, the first of its kind in Latin America.
