Once this war is over it looks like Benjamin Netanyahu is going to have some serious political troubles. Both Israel’s right and left are upset at him and there is good reason for both. The major issue is lack of preparedness on the issue of the tunnels and the extraordinary number of missiles possessed by Hamas that have already killed almost 60 IDF troops.
A friend of mine left for Israel the other day with extra boxes of supplies she is bringing for the troops. It’s a wonderful thing to be involved in the war effort and the battle to defeat terror from our secure perches on Long Island and in LA but does the IDF really need all those supplies bought in Brooklyn and transported to the Gaza border?
The person who left to Israel left with cases of men’s underwear and boxes of Chap Stick. I asked her if she was serious. “Are you telling me the IDF cannot supply underwear for the boys? I asked incredulously. After a little research I was told that a supply officer in the IDF who obviously cannot be identified told a contact in Israel that the IDF has enough underwear for all the troops, their parents and even their grandparents.
I’m still waiting to hear about the Chap Stick situation.
Then this morning I received an e mail from someone who just returned from a five day trip to the Gaza border to say that upon meeting troops coming out of Gaza the most common request was for an item called “The Leatherman.” Here’s what it says online about this piece of equipment: “Leatherman Sidekick Multi-Tool
“This handy pocket-sized tool has all the features you need to get your project done, at a fraction of the cost. The handy, outside-accessible blades mean you can open the knife with just one hand and rounded handles make getting a grip around their all-new, spring-action jaws easy and very comfortable. Stainless steel and backed by a 25-year warranty; first choice, or handy second backup, you can’t beat the value of the Sidekick.”
For my part I continuously cannot get over that the most capable and efficient army in the world is so inefficient. Sometimes I just think that all these things are just an extension of the effort by Israel to market itself to the Diaspora as a spiritual Disneyland.
There will be time later to analyze all this. Right now we are just best off to get them whatever they need or whatever the rumors day they need, whether it is underwear or Chap Stick.
