Three men were charged with assault after physically attacking Jewish counter-protesters who showed up at an anti-Israel rally last month in Calgary, Canada, Sun News reported recently.

Half a dozen Israel supporters who attended the rally on July 18 ended up in hospital, including a mother and a daughter who were severely beaten, after being attacked by Aziz Mohammed Madi, 18, and Arlsan Khan, 27, both from Calgary. While the assault took place across the street from the Calgary City Hall, a mob chanted “Death to the Jews,” according to Sun News.

A 16-year-old male was also charged but his name was not released to the public under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. Police said a fourth man will likely be charged as well.

The charges were brought against the men only after thousands of Calgarians and other Canadians signed a petition that was sent to the police commissioner and mayor demanding that the criminals be found and charged for their crimes. It was the largest petition ever received by the Calgarian police commissioner, according to Sun News.

Calgarians also raised over $5,000 to hire a top lawyer to represent the mother and daughter attacked at the riot. Locals also encouraged the public to help track down the perpetrators by offering to pay a bounty of $500 for each suspect that could be conclusively identified.

Initially, the Calgary police department issued a public statement claiming that police officers were on hand at the rally and responded to the violence immediately. The department then released another statement admitting that authorities were not at the riot, according to Sun News.

Shortly after the attack, a large pro-Israel rally gathered at City Hall. Nine hundred Calgarians held Canadian and Israeli flags, sang “Oh Canada” and denounced Hamas terrorism. A group of Arabs gathered nearby as a counter-protest and shouted “Heil Hitler,” according to the report.

Investigators are seeking the public’s help in identifying a man who may have further information about the assaults at the rally. They are searching for an olive-skinned male with dark hair and a slim build who was seen at the demonstration wearing jeans, a white T-shirt with a DULUX logo on it, white runners and a tan baseball cap. His hands and clothing were stained with white paint.
