It was advertised as a night of unity, inspiration, and great entertainment. And true to their word, Chazaq’s Big Event was just that. On Sunday night, March 3, over a thousand people packed the auditorium of Forest Hills High School for Chazaq’s first annual Big Event. The capacity crowd was treated to three phenomenal lectures, beginning with Rabbi Paysach Krohn and ending with Rabbi Zecharia Wallerstein, with Mr. Charlie Harari sandwiched in between. The world-renowned trio brought the crowd to tears, gave them some great laughs, and praised Chazaq for being a leading force in inspiring Jews of all backgrounds and age groups throughout the Queens community.
A touching 6-minute video zeroing in on Chazaq’s amazing accomplishments was produced by AK Studio. Mr. Boruch Singer was honored with relaying divrei beracha from Rav Noach Isaac Oelboum, mara d’asra of Khal Nachlas Yitzchok in Kew Gardens Hills, who praised Chazaq as an organization that is mekarev rechokim and mechazek krovim—bringing those who are distant from Torah closer to Hashem, while also strengthening those who are close. His letter concluded by calling upon the community to support Chazaq’s phenomenal outreach work, which is begeder pikuach nefesh.
Mr. Tal Tepper was then honored with reading divrei beracha from Rav Ovadia Yosef, the preeminent posek for Sephardic Jewry, who praised Chazaq director Rav Ilan Meirov as a precious man whose achievements are great in inspiring young and old. Mr. Tepper proceeded to introduce Chazaq’s sefer Torah campaign in which proceeds will go towards Chazaq’s special after-school program for public-school students. Hundreds of people signed up to join this campaign, which will be introduced to the community at large in the very near future.
This event hosted several elected officials and dignitaries. Congresswoman Grace Meng presented Chazaq with a proclamation declaring March 3, 2013, as “Chazaq Day” throughout the Sixth Congressional District. Other officials in attendance included State Senator Toby Stavitsky, Councilwoman Karen Koslowitz, and Assemblyman Michael Simanowitz.
Chazaq Director Rabbi Ilan Meirov presented an award to Mr. David ben Moshe HaCohen Meirov, thanking him and his family for their support of Chazaq’s mission in building a stronger future. A special misheberach was recited for the refuah shleimah of his mother, Liza bat Sarah, and the crowd answered a resounding Amein at this great eis ratzon. Mr. Isaac Sasson was also honored at the event, being acknowledged for his dedication to Chazaq’s mission.
On the entertainment side, renowned mentalist David Levitan amazed the crowd with his skills. He called random people from the audience and was able to reveal their thoughts by simply looking them in the eye! You have to see it to believe it! To cap things off, Gad Elbaz, a renowned singer from Israel, made a surprise appearance on behalf of Chazaq and sang several inspirational songs thereby stamping an evening of unforgettable memories.
