A leading American cultural magazine on developing technology, Wired, published an unusual review on Friday of the “craziest” job openings in the military-industrial complex.
The short list includes a surprising ad for an intelligence contractor focusing on terrorists and enemy countries, which is looking for a part-time Yiddish linguist.
According to the report, the company behind the ad is MVM Inc., one of the biggest security contractors used by US intelligence agencies. From its office in Virginia, the company provides security contractors, staffing, training, translation and related services to US Government clients.
According to the company’s website, it is recruiting an Yiddish linguist specialist with “native or near native oral and written communications skills,” including the ability to “comprehend slang and colloquial expressions.”
“Now the question is: What in the world is a CIA-linked firm trying to translate from Yiddish? Or who is speaking it and getting snooped on?” the American magazine wonders.
By the way, the job also involves working during nights and weekends, a somewhat problematic requirement as it limits ultra-Orthodox Jews who make up the majority of Yiddish speakers worldwide.
The job pays $30-35 per hour, and all applicants must be US citizens and will be subject to a Government Security Background Investigation.
