Crash Closes Bayonne Bridge; Police Search for Driver

Motorists should avoid the Bayonne Bridge.

The span is closed in both directions because of a crash involving three cars.

Port Authority police spokesman Al Della Fave says a van was crossing the Bayonne Bridge when it crossed the center line and struck another vehicle around 4 a.m. Friday.

Fave says the driver of the van jumped into a pickup that had stopped to assist and drove off.

A search is underway for the driver of a black Dodge 1500 pickup with New York license plates that read SALSA.

Delays are backed up for several miles from New Jersey into Staten Island.

The span connects Bayonne with Staten Island.

It is not clear if anyone was injured in the multi-vehicle crash.
