One person has died in a five-alarm fire in SoHo that authorities are calling suspicious.

The fire inside the five-story apartment building at 41 Spring St. started at about 6:30 p.m. and quickly spread to the roof, according to FDNY Fire Chief James Esposito.

The person who died was on an upper floor at the time of the fire, he said. There are additional injuries.

The entire stairwell between the second and third floors of the building is gone, Esposito said. At least 168 firefighters are battling the blaze.

A criminal investigation into the fire is underway.
