Place this one in the “woops” column. Former New York City Mayor Ed Koch spent nearly a year designing his tombstone, but despite his fastidious efforts human error still staked its claim: it has the wrong birthdate on it. Koch, who was born in 1924, was given an 18-year boost by the engraver, with the date reading 1942.

The mistake, reported on Monday by WNBC-TV, was made earlier this month when the engraver, Tommy F. Flynn, was putting the final touches on Koch’s tombstone.

“I inverted 1924 to 1942, and I’m going to fix it,” Flynn told the New York Times. “It was a simple human error.” He said it would be fixed within three weeks.

Koch died in February. Following his death, his burial plot received considerable media attention for its inclusion of, among other citations, the last words of slain Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl: “My father is Jewish. My mother is Jewish. I am Jewish.”
