French president calls for unity after ‘appalling anti-Semitic attack’ on kosher grocery

( French President Francois Hollande called the Muslim terrorist siege on a Paris kosher grocery store an “appalling anti-Semitic attack.”

In a televised address from Elysee on Friday night, after a day in which two dramatic hostage situations unfolded, Hollande called for vigilance and national unity against “fanatics.”

“It is our best weapon,” he said. “We can fight against anything that could divide us.”

Brothers Cherif Kouachi and Said Kouachi, the two Islamist terrorists suspected to have carried out the shooting that killed 12 people at the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo, were killed Friday in a police raid on a printing shop in the Paris suburb of Dammartin-en-Goele, where the Kouachi brothers had taken one man hostage. In a separate but simultaneous raid, Muslim terrorist Amedy Coulibaly, who took nearly 20 hostages at a kosher supermarket in the Porte de Vincennes neighborhood of eastern Paris, was also killed by French police. Four of Coulibaly’s hostages were killed.

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged Hollande to maintain tight security on Jewish sites following the attacks.

“Prime Minister Netanyahu asked the president of France to keep up the increased security on Jewish institutions even after things return to normal,” an Israeli government source told AFP.
