A group of hareidi-religious travelers was stranded in Ben Gurion Airport for the Sabbath this week after flight delays caused their plane to get in just as the day of rest began.

The group was traveling on a flight from Philadelphia in the United States that had been scheduled to land at 2:15 p.m. However, delays led it to arrive shortly before sundown Friday.

One traveler, realizing the plane was likely to arrive in Israel late, contacted El Al’s rabbi, Rabbi Yochanan Chiyut, and informed him of the situation. Rabbi Chiyut contacted ZAKA, which immediately stepped up to help.

When the worried passengers got to Border Control shortly before sunset, they were greeted by volunteers bearing food, drink, and even candy for the children. Some volunteers even stayed in the terminal for the day to keep the visitors company.

When the Sabbath went out on Saturday night the travelers warmly thanked the volunteers, and continued on to their final destinations within Israel.
