Allergy Poster Contest. In order to teach students at HANC’s Samuel & Elizabeth Bass Golding Elementary School, in West Hempstead, about the dangers of allergies and the ways they can look out for their friends with allergies, students participated in an allergy poster-design contest. HANC is proud of all its students for being concerned about their friends.

Mishmar Celebration Dinner. Another amazing year of mishmar has come to an end. Each week, more than 70 students from third through sixth grade voluntarily stayed in school for an extra hour of Torah learning. The students studied mishnayot, the meaning of mitzvot, and the laws of lashonha’ra.

To celebrate their year of learning, the students were treated to a delicious year-end mishmar barbecue which included divreiTorah from students in each mishmar class. The students also enjoyed a magic show by Ben Cohen. (They especially loved it when the magician poured juice down Rabbi Sokol’s shoe.)

Thanks to mishmar teachers Rabbi Merrill, Rabbi Hoffman, Rabbi Sokol, Morah Aliza, and Morah Tawil for teaching and inspiring their classes each week. Also thanks to the PTA for its generous sponsorship of the evening and the year-round mishmar snacks. Additional thanks to Bentzy Gadon, Meir Boker, Mrs. Ciment, and Mrs. Goldberg for assisting with the barbecue.

Fifth-Grade State Extravaganza. Fifth-graders have been working hard on their state projects for months, and all the hard work culminated in a fantastic “State Extravaganza.” Each student was assigned a U.S. state, and over the last few months the students did research to learn about their state. After conducting their research, the students created a state product map, a PowerPoint presentation about their state, a tri-fold presentation that included detailed itineraries for trips taken to two cities in their states, and each student wrote a storybook about their state.

In honor of the State Extravaganza, students came dressed in costumes representing their state and had a fancy lunch and presentation in the Minyan Room, which was decorated in red, white, and blue. The lunch menu included sushi (Washington State and Hawaii) and salad (California and Florida) appetizers, Southern fried chicken & poppers (Arkansas), barbecued beef (Texas), french fries (Idaho), and corn (Nebraska) for the main course and yummy apple pie (New York), cotton candy (they grow cotton in the South!) and Sno Cones (it’s cold in Alaska!) for dessert. Drinks included Coca-Cola (Georgia), Arizona Iced Tea, and Florida orange juice.

The children sang “This Land Is Your Land” by Woody Guthrie, viewed all their PowerPoint Presentations, and walked the red carpet to take pictures in the State Extravaganza photo booth. The students also gave out items that represented their states, including a Coca-Cola glass (Georgia), a plastic saxophone (Louisiana), an ice-cream shooter (Vermont), and a cactus (Nevada).

A big thank-you to the Block family for the sushi, salad, fruit, and apple pies; the Yitzhaky family for providing the chicken, beef, and side dishes; and the Nenner and Davis families for supplying the cotton candy and Sno Cones.

The students learned so much doing their state projects and they had an absolute blast at the State Extravaganza!
