Chabad of Hewlett hosted a back-to-school barbecue on September 11, which included a well-balanced mix of honoring the memories of those lost, showing appreciation to law enforcement, and celebrating the future, including launching the Hewlett Chess Club. Cub Scout Troop 20 led the Pledge of Allegiance. Captain Kenneth J. Catalani from the NCPD greeted the crowd while the 4th Precinct and auxiliary police provided their usual stellar level of protection. Tribute was paid to military veterans, represented by David ‘Bull’ Gurfein. Supervisor Anthony J. Santino, Councilman Anthony D’Esposito, and Commissioner Kaminetsky were on hand to honor Chabad. Sponsors and volunteers include Kim and Alex, Jeff Lane, Westside Foods, Arthur and Stella Gershfeld, Jules Back, Miri Orr, Yakov Perper, and volunteers from Hewlett High School and Chabad.
