Israeli soldiers along with a special operations unit of the Border Police and Military Intelligence, foiled a large-scale drug smuggling attempt to bring 17 kg of heroin and 48 kg of hashish from Jordan into Israel on Sunday. The haul was valued at upwards of $2 million.
Four suspects, all residents of the Negev, were apprehended by police as they attempted to flee by car, Ynet reported. One of the detainees is suspected of heading a network that smuggles drugs from the Jordanian border into Israel.
A newly erected fence along the border with Egypt has stunted the flow of drugs from that country and has made the border with Jordan, which is porous in comparison, all the more appealing to smugglers.
