JNS.org — Israeli Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked is backing a proposed bill to allow the appointment of Supreme Court judges without the approval of Supreme Court Chief Justice Miriam Naor.

Shaked’s move comes ahead of the upcoming appointment, by the Judicial Selection Committee, of four new Supreme Court justices.

The Judicial Selection Committee is comprised of four politicians, three Supreme Court justices, including Naor, and two members of the Israel Bar Association. Members of the ruling Likud party and other nationalist factions have been highly critical of the court in the past over allegations that it has encroached on the legislature’s domain by issuing rulings on non-judicial, political issues.

Shaked is from the Jewish Home party, headed by Education Minister Naftali Bennett.
