Israeli troops fire on Syrian positions after mortar strikes Golan

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Israeli troops fired at Syrian military positions in response to a mortar fired on the Golan Heights.

The mortar was fired early Monday morning, and exploded near the border fence between Syria and Israel on the Golan Heights.

The Israel Defense Forces responded by firing at the source of the rocket fire inside of Syria.

No injuries or damage was reported on the Israeli side.

The exchange came two weeks after a rocket fired from Syria killed Israeli teenager Mohammed Karaka after it struck the vehicle in which he was riding with his father and several other civil employees of the military working to strengthen the border fence,

The IDF believed that the attack was intentional and not fallout from Syria’s three-year long civil war.

In March, the Israeli army bombed Syrian military targets after four soldiers were injured in a roadside bomb attack. In early June, the Iron Dome anti-missile system discharged after two mortars from Syria were fired at Israel.
