Supporting camp season. With the first half of the summer behind us, and the second half kicking into gear, local children (and their parents) are enjoying the many benefits of summer camp. Summer camp can play a strong, positive role in the formative years of a child’s life. Unfortunately, not all families are financially capable to make this a reality for their children. This year, Hurricane Sandy wiped out homes and cars, as well as many people’s sources of income. Many parents have been struggling to make ends meet, to repair the damage, and to get back on their feet. Due to the unexpected losses, summer camp seems like a luxury that many families simply cannot afford.
Thanks to the UJA-Federation, the Rabbi Michael Scholar Camp Scholarship Fund has been able to assist 121 children in going to camp this summer. The fund, named after a former president of the Jewish Community Council of the Rockaway Peninsula, provides scholarships to make it possible for Jewish children from needy families to attend Jewish summer day camps. The fund ensures that these children are involved in activities that draw them close to an enriched Judaism to foster Jewish pride, and passion for serving G‑d during the summer, and year round. Due to the outstanding support of the UJA-Federation of NY, the fund has had the privilege of sending its scholarship recipients to 34 camps this summer.
Bill Thompson visits JCCRP. On Monday, August 5, Bill Thompson met with Nathan Krasnovsky, executive director of the JCCRP, and the esteemed JCCRP board members, where he received a full tour of the premises and was introduced to the staff and the many services the JCCRP has to offer the community. Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder was in attendance and shared with Mr. Thompson his concerns and vision for the Rockaways as well as pointing out the JCCRP’s extraordinary efforts during the storm that are still continuing to this day. “It was a pleasure discussing with Mr. Thompson his plan for the Rockaways and New York City,” noted Nathan Krasnovsky.
As a former New York City Comptroller, Mr. Thompson has been noted for his “maturity” as well as his “superior experience” and capability. Born and raised in New York, Thompson’s recent 24-hour five-borough tour shows his dedication to his campaign and to New Yorkers. Mr. Thompson’s stop at the JCCRP elucidates his devotion to the needs of the Jewish community and his enthusiasm to include frontline providers, like the JCCRP, in his plans to improve our city.
