A mechanic at Kennedy Airport severed his finger on a baggage belt while he was beginning a repair Monday morning, authorities say.

The 56-year-old mechanic, who performs maintenance on baggage belts at the airport, was in the process of beginning a repair in Terminal 1 when he tripped and fell, said Port Authority spokesman Steve Coleman.

His hand landed on a baggage belt, which severed his left index finger entirely, said Coleman. He was taken to Belleve Hospital

The mechanic, who works for Oxford Tech Services, was identified as Berto Duran of Valley Stream.
