The Financial Services Institute (FSI) launched Capitol Hill visits this week, in which some of its members held 200 meetings with congressional members and staff. FSI represents independent-broker dealers and financial advisers, and are among those pushing for an extension of the DOL comment deadline.

The Department of Labor has proposed rules designed to reduce conflicts of interest for brokers working with retirement accounts, but, in the view of many, have not provided for a sufficient comment period for these rules to be considered. Kive Strickoff and his team members visited with six different New York congressional offices and their staff to bring forward important points about this and other issues of concern to the financial-adviser community and the investment public.

“It was very gratifying to receive the strong expressions of support from among the Senate and House members and staff with whom we visited, and their willingness to endorse the request for the 45-day extension of the DOL comment period,” said Mr. Strickoff. “These important issues with which we are grappling are challenging, and must be viewed with a very careful eye,” continued Mr. Strickoff. “Left unchanged in their initial draft, there could be very negative unintended consequences to the general investing public, and it is important that we engage in a dialogue with the Department of Labor in helping to modify their proposed regulations and come up with a better final approach to the fiduciary issue.”
