Getting a head start on experiencing their high-school years, over 130 eighth-grade applicants from several metropolitan area elementary schools spent a good part of Thursday, February 2, at the Stella K. Abraham High School for Girls. With SKA students serving as guides, girls from HALB, Shulamith, YCQ, HANC, and others got a glimpse of the highlights the school has to offer, along with the warmth and energy it projects. After partaking of refreshments upon their arrival, the eighth-graders were addressed by Mrs. Helen Spirn, SKA’s head of school, and Rabbi Jeff Rothman, principal of grades 9–10, followed by SKA students from different grades from varying elementary schools who answered questions about the school and discussed their own high-school experiences. Can you see yourself at SKA? The hallways thronged with current and hopeful students making their way to their various classrooms; the visitors had the opportunity to “spend an hour” at SKA by attending Tanach, math, biology, art, and even dance classes taught by SKA faculty members. Taking turns, the eighth-graders played an interactive multimedia game of Panoply and then enjoyed a delicious lunch with raffle prizes while socializing with SKA students and administrators. SKA binders and Frisbees were among the souvenirs the appreciative eighth-graders took home. It was a wonderful way to end a very informative day!
