Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich devoted time on a recent trip to New York to meet with leaders and activists in the Jewish community. “It is imperative to show hakaras ha’tov to the Speaker,” remarked Jack Brach. “Today it is a given that as a party, the Republicans have a stronger appreciation, through thick and thin, for the U.S.-Israel relationship, but just 30 years ago that was not the case. Newt was in the forefront of the effort to forge relationships and build coalitions between the Republican Party and our community.” Jewish donors such as Sheldon Adelson and George Klein also believe that Gingrich will fare better against Obama. “In 1980, during the primaries, the conventional wisdom was that the GOP needed a moderate like George H.W. Bush to regain the White House. In the end, the clearer contrast Reagan represented proved to be the winning formula.” The campaign is confident that they have mapped out a path to getting the nomination in Tampa this summer. Newt has a strong organization and deep support in many of the Super Tuesday (March 6) states. Gingrich will use the time until then to build his infrastructure, raise funds, and make a number of major policy addresses. He will be back in New York at the end of the month and the second week in March.
