altIn celebration of 55 years of Torah education, the Yeshiva of South Shore will honor vibrant community leaders at their 55th annual banquet to be held on Sunday evening, March 4, at the New York Hall of Science, according to dinner chairman Ely Baum.
Steve and Yonina Wind: Young Leadership Award. The Winds are both incredibly devoted to the yeshiva. Steve is an active member of the young leadership committee, and Yonina serves tirelessly as co-president of the PTA. Steve is a financial analyst at the hedge fund, Cedarview Capital Management, and Yonina conducts investigative research at Deloitte Financial Advisory Services. Active members of the Young Israel of Woodmere and Ohel’s Long Island leadership advisory board, the Winds are the proud parents of three delightful YOSS preschoolers: Ari in pre-1A, and twins Shmuel and Tani, in nursery, as well as an adorable daughter, Esti.
Rabbi Avi and Mrs/ Penina Pechman: Parents of the Year. Avi, a musmach of RIETS, is a successful business analyst at Platinum Human Resource Management. Penina is a well-loved YOSS preschool morah (and Camp Toras Chaim morah) for over 10 years, exuding warmth, care, and concern for the yeshiva’s children as if they were her own! Despite his busy schedule, Avi devotes much time to learning Torah and coordinating the daf yomi program at the Young Israel of West Hempstead. The Pechmans are the proud parents of sons Aharon, (YOSS 2010), Dov, an eighth grader, and Yehoshua, a second grader, as well as daughters Devora, a nursing student at Hunter College, and Chana, a senior at TAG.
Dedication of CALCULATE! Math Lab by Fred and Beverly Lifschutz. Through the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Lifschutz, the yeshiva has established a math enrichment laboratory to provide its most talented math students with the opportunity to excel. The Lifschutzes have two wonderful daughters: Dara, a skilled radiologist specializing in women’s imaging, and Miriam Beth, a dedicated special education teacher who is married to Yosef Siegel, and are the proud parents of Shmuel and Sruli, YOSS talmidim, and Chavi.
Mr. Lawrence Roman, CEO of WDF Inc.: Man of the Year. Mr. Roman has worked earnestly over the last three decades to transform his family-owned business into a firm recognized as a leader in the plumbing and construction industries. Mr. Roman developed a talent for making strategic business decisions early in his life. His firm has played an important role in such notable construction projects as the Time Warner Center, Trump Westside, and the Freedom Tower. Mr. Roman has been a longtime friend of Rabbi Kamenetzky and has been a supporter of the YOSS scholarship fund for many years.
Congressman Peter King: National Leadership Award. In recognition of Congressman King’s strong commitment to the safety of our country and his open concerns regarding terrorism. His efforts on behalf of homeland security have had a profound influence on the legislation he supports. The award will be presented to him by NY State Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos. Congressman King is serving his tenth term in the U.S. House of Representatives. He has worked hard to strengthen and maintain Social Security and Medicare. He is currently Chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security and a staunch defender of the State of Israel.
Mr. Joel Beritz and Mr. Jason Cury of the CIJE: Hakoras Hatov Award. On behalf of Center for Initiatives in Jewish Education, for enhancing and enriching the quality of the yeshiva by upgrading the technology and programs available to Jewish day schools and yeshivos. South Shore has been a longtime beneficiary of CIJE’s gifts of smart boards, science and computer labs, and various extracurricular programs in science, engineering, and physics.
From its founding in East New York 85 years ago, and for 55 years on Long Island, Yeshiva Toras Chaim of South Shore has inculcated thousands of children and young men with Torah values and the leadership skills to enable the torch of Jewish leadership to pass to future generations.
By attending the 55th annual banquet on Sunday, March 4, you will assure the continuity of this pioneering yeshiva as a vibrant Torah center for our community, our families, and our children.
