Recently, Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano and Dr. Thomas Rogers, superintendant of BOCES and Nassau County schools, met with Rabbi Dr. Martin Schloss, director, government relations and general studies for department of day schools and yeshivot of The Jewish Education Project (Formerly BJE); Rabbi Chaim Dovid Zweibel, executive vice-president of Agudath Israel of America; and other county education officials to establish a Nassau County Council of Religious and Independent Schools with an aim towards maximizing educational opportunities for non-public school children in Nassau County. Mr. Mangano pledged to expend all the resources of his office and the Nassau County school system to insure that private schools in Nassau County receive their fair share of New York State education funding. According to Rabbi Mordechai Kamenetzky, dean of Yeshiva of South Shore, who arranged the meeting, “This initial meeting will surely help lay the groundwork where every school in Nassau County has a voice for its educational needs and concerns. I truly want to thank Mr. Mangano for his ardent attention to these important issues.†Rabbi Marty Schloss commented, “The Jewish Education Project was particularly pleased with the meeting in that it provides a meaningful platform for educational collaborations involving both the public and private sectors. The very nature of this council fosters pooled knowledge, expertise, and resources in the pursuit of academic excellence—a critical asset for the future of Nassau County.†Special thanks to Jeremy Zenilman for his role in organizing the different liaisons.
