NCYI Basketball Crowns Two Champions For 2015

The National Council of Young Israel Basketball League concluded its 2015 season with a championship doubleheader on June 3. The opening game featured a matchup of the two top seeds in the Intermediate Division with two local teams: The Red Shul vs. Harborview. Red Shul started off fast and grabbed an early 11–3 lead, increasing the lead to 14–5 after one quarter. Harborview made some adjustments in the early part of the second quarter and was able to cut the lead to 16–10. But Red Shul stormed right back with a 6–0 run to increase the lead to 22–10. Yet Harborview would not let up and closed the first half down 24–16. Buff, Gralla, and Ackerman led Red Shul with 6 points each. Maidi, Miller, and Wirtzberger led Harborview with 4 points each.

In the second half, Red Shul took control of the game. They increased the lead to 29–20, and finished the quarter ahead by a score of 38–24. Midway through the fourth quarter, Eichorn hit a big three, pushing the lead to 53–34. The teams traded baskets the rest of the way, and Red Shul secured the victory and the championship with a 60–43 advantage. Eichorn led Red Shul with 15 points and Gralla chipped in with 12. Eli David led Harborview with 12 points.

Then it was time for the Senior Division championship featuring Or Chaim vs. Mesivta Ateres Yaakov (MAY). This contest also featured the top two seeds in the Senior Division. Or Chaim opened the game with a 15–4 lead after the first quarter. MAY settled themselves and cut the lead to 18–10, and trailed at halftime by a score of 20–13. In the third quarter, MAY made a furious comeback and managed to cut the lead to 4 points. But Or Chaim went on a scoring tear and shut down MAY the rest of the way and won the championship by a final score of 45–30.

This marks the conclusion of another successful season of Young Israel basketball.
