The gorilla incident is still in the news. A woman who videotaped the gorilla attacking the little boy who jumped or fell into the moat at the Cincinnati Zoo said that the boy had just a few seconds left before the gorilla would have mauled him to death. She feels the zookeeper did the right thing killing the gorilla to save the boy.

We live in such a confused time where priorities are twisted. Are we any different from the mixed-up animal activists when we are more concerned about impressing people rather than caring for people? It isn’t how brilliant, rich, beautiful, or perfect we try to be. It’s about middos tovos, caring and going out of your way for others.

As we head towards Shavuos, it’s inspiring to know that for close to 3,000 years we have been passing our mesorah to our children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren as Bnei Yisrael promised that their children would be the guarantors for us that we would keep the Torah for eternity.

On Monday night, watching the final shiur in the series on emunah and bitachon given by Tammy Karmel, I thought about how appropriate that we are finishing the series just before Shavuos. That was when we said “na’aseh v’nishma”–we will do and we will listen. Tammy has been emphasizing getting closer to Hashem and trusting Him to help us achieve that spiritual closeness. We need to have hakaras ha’tov, gratefulness, which leads to humility, for everything Hashem has given us. No one is better than another. We are different and Hashem has bestowed on each of us the gifts He wants us to have. We have to use the tools he has given us to reach our potential. We will never feel that we are missing anything if we believe that it is all a gift from Hashem.

As we aspire to spiritual heights, Tammy said to make changes step by step. Curbing our anger, frustrations, and disappointments all take baby steps. Tammy said she has zero tolerance for self-pity, depression, or anguish in her own life. She is a special woman who has inspired us all and I look forward to attending additional shiurim by Tammy.

BYQ Celebrates Authors’ Day. This week, Bais Yaakov of Queens hosted its annual Authors’ Day, when students from first through fourth grades invite family to shep nachas at their accomplishments as authors. Grandparents and parents went into classrooms to watch their girls perform skits, listen to educational songs, read poetry and biographies, and share in learning centers, to experience just some of what students experience on a daily basis at BYQ!

The guests were overwhelmed with the level of writing, the depth of emotion in the pieces, the beautiful language, and the magnificent illustrations. The girls were poised and confident speakers, comfortable in their performances and prideful of their work. One mother exclaimed, “Watching my daughter read from the book she created, share her dedication in front of other parents, and describe herself so articulately to others absolutely astounded me. She clearly receives an abundance of nurturing from her teachers to love reading, writing, and sharing her thoughts with others.”
