A New York state trooper was stabbed in the neck with a large kitchen knife today by a homeless man while in the state Capitol complex, officials said.
The officer, identified as Rodney Smith, was knifed once at the Empire State Plaza in Albany around 4:50 p.m.
The bloodshed took place in an underground concourse that connects multiple buildings for the state Capitol.
It was not immediately clear why the attacker wounded the police officer, whose name was reported byThe Saratogian.
The suspect was still at-large as of early this evening. He is believed to have taken the trooper’s radio during the attack.
Police quickly closed off the plaza in hopes of finding the suspect, the Albany Times Union said.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo was not at the Capitol at the time of the attack.
No description of the suspect was immediately provided.
