An online petition calling for the US to declare Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood a “terrorist group” has surpassed 120,000 signatures in a month, qualifying to be officially considered by the White House, Daily News Egypt reported, linking to the petition.
“The Muslim Brotherhood has shown in the past few days that it is willing to engage in violence and killing of innocent civilians in order to invoke fear in the hearts of its opponents,” the petition said, adding: “This is terrorism.” The petition also accused the Brotherhood of having direct ties with other terrorist groups, including Hamas.
The petition was created through the “We the People” section of www.whitehouse.gov. To be considered officially by the administration, a petition must gather 150 signatures within 30 days from its creation, then 100,000 more signatures within the next 30 days. Daily News Egypt said the petition was created on July 7 and by July 30 already had 120,000 signatures.
Other Egyptian groups have been declared terror organizations by the US, including Al-Jamaa Al-Islamiya, in 1997. Daily News Egypt said the group, represented in Egypt by their political wing, the Building and Development Party, called on the US to be removed from this list in May.
