On Rosh Chodesh Shevat, many boys from the community joined together for a special siyum on SeferShmuel. Every Monday night, these boys join together in Congregation Tifereth Zvi on Columbia Avenue to learn Navi with Rabbi Yitzie Ross for an hour. Once the learning is over, they are e-mailed a quiz on the perakim they learned, and many of them answer all the questions.

The shiur is free and the knowledge gained is priceless. Rabbi Ross weaves tales from the Midrash into the shiur, and the boys follow along inside as they analyze the precious words of the Navi. In the words of a thrilled parent, “My son loved the learning, and is gaining skills and Torah while having a great time! What’s not to love?!” When this shiur started three years ago, only 12 boys attended. This past shiur averaged over 100 boys from Yeshiva Ketana of Long Island, Yeshiva Darchei Torah, Hebrew Academy of Long Beach, and the Yeshiva of South Shore.

Snow, rain, or cold doesn’t stop these boys, and week after week they give up an hour of their personal time to learn Torah. As an added bonus, they analyze the words and shorashim, and have the opportunity to strengthen their kriah and havanah.

At the siyum, they were privileged to hear from Rabbi Mordechai Kamenetzky of the Yeshiva of South Shore who complimented the boys on their commitment to learn Navi outside of the yeshivos. The boys then had a delicious meal catered by Scott Fagan of Traditions Catering, and a yummy cake bought by Steven and Rebecca Grossman in honor of the boys.

The next shiur will take place, iy’H, on Monday night, February 1 at CTZ (26 Columbia in Cedarhurst) from 6:45 until 7:45 p.m. All boys in grades third through fifth are welcome to join (there is no charge) as they begin Melachim. For more information, or to join the e-mail list, please contact Rabbi Ross at Rebbe@Gishmak.com. Looking forward to seeing your bnei Torah!
