Rabbis Arrested in Agunot Scheme

NY Daily News – Two rabbis plotted to kidnap Jewish husbands, torture them with electric cattle prods and force them to grant their desperate wives religious divorces, the feds charged Thursday.

Rabbi Mendel Epstein, 68, of Brooklyn and Rabbi Martin Wolmark, 55, of Monsey, Rockland County, were among 10 people arrested in the barbarous scheme with tentacles that ran all the way to the rabbinical court.

    Extortion, beatings, corruption, judicial favoritism, vicious hatred within families and communities, and the like have no proper place in Jewish life, but they regrettably happen anyway. Whether the basic fault belongs to some leaders or some followers or both is open to dispute, but, in any case, we too often present a really sorry picture of darkness unto the nations, standing our true mission on its head. Who will step up to stop all serious abuses by all parties and restore our good name?
