Iran’s Ambassador to Russia said Monday that the country’s Russian-built Bushehr nuclear power plant has suffered a malfunction in its main generator.
Mahmoud Reza Sadjadi did not specify the nature of the malfunction but stressed it was not caused by a recent spate of earthquakes that hit the country, AFP cited Russia’s state Itar-TASS news agency as reporting.
“In close cooperation, our and Russian specialists are undertaking efforts to fix the malfunction,” Sadjadi was quoted as saying.
He added that the issue “was linked to the work of the generator” and had occurred some time ago.
Iran has sought to downplay the reactor’s vulnerability to earthquakes. On Sunday, Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi dismissed the idea.
“The propaganda by certain countries regarding concerns over the security of this power plant is baseless,” the foreign minister was quoted as saying by official state media.
