Iconic Jewish comedian Joan Rivers was rushed to a hospital in New York on Thursday after she stopped breathing during surgery, entertainment website TMZ reported.

According to TMZ, Rivers, who is 81-years-old, was undergoing a throat procedure on her vocal chords when she stopped breathing.

The NYPD told TMZ that Rivers was in critical condition.

During Operation Protective Edge in Gaza this past summer, Rivers voiced unequivocal support for Israel,  saying it had a right to defend itself against Hamas rocket fire.

“Let me just tell you if New Jersey was firing rockets into New York we would wipe them out. If we heard they were digging tunnels from New Jersey to New York we would get rid of Jersey,” Rivers told a TMZ reporter in July.
