Hamas and the Islamic Jihad welcomed on Monday Defense Minister Ehud Barak’s decision to quit public life.
Hamas spokesman in Gaza Fawzi Barhoum said Barak’s announcement proves that he failed in overseeing the political and military aspects of Operation Pillar of Defense.
“The resignation underscores the Israeli government’s failure in achieving its goals during the operation,” Fawzi said.
Barhoum further claimed that Barak’s decision constitutes “another victory for the resistance in the military operation and reflects the panic and crisis the Israeli leaders are suffering from in light of the operation’s results.”
Abu Ahmad, a spokesman for Islamic Jihad’s Al-Quds Brigades, said that by resigning Barak is “recognizing the resounding defeat at the hands of the resistance and (the resistance’s) quality strikes that jolted Tel Aviv.”
The Iranians also addressed Barak’s decision, with one local media outlet presenting it as a “defeat for the Zionist regime in Operation Pillar of Defense.”
The Fars news agency called Barak the “first victim” of the IDF’s eight-day operation in Gaza, while the Asr-e-Iran news website called the defense minister’s resignation an “aftershock” of the operation.
