Even the title of this press release beggars belief.

Ministers serving in the Israeli government have proposed a law that would send to jail any women caught praying aloud with a prayer shawl and tefillin at the Western Wall.

The law, in effect, makes a basic act of emancipated Jewish womanhood illegal in the Jewish State.

It is increasingly clear that politicians representing the ultra-Orthodox minority in Israel are increasingly desperate:  they are even taking steps that expose their own deviousness.

It is astonishing that in the face of this outrage, the prime minister has remained silent.  It is shameful.

Israel has a women’s prison, Neve Tirzah. I hope the jailhouse rabbi is getting ready for us, because there too, we will pray out loud, proudly wear our prayer shawls, and wrap ourselves in tefillin.
