(JNS.org) A 13-year-old from the Bayside neighborhood in Queens, NY, won the Scripps National Spelling Bee by
correctly spelling the German-derived Yiddish word “Knaidel.” Arvind Mahankali won
In previous spelling bee competitions, Mahankali was defeated by the German-derived words, “Jugendstil” and
“schwannoma,” but this year, he said he was “prepared German words and I studied them, so
when I got German words this year, I wasn’t worried,” according to
the New York Post.
