The following is a statement from Robert Levi, Chairman of the Board of the National Council of Young Israel, that was made in conjunction with today’s ‘National Leadership Assembly,’ which was organized by the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations and held at the National Press Club in Washington, DC, in order to express solidarity with the State of Israel and demonstrate the unity of the American Jewish community in support of the people of Israel:
“Today, once again, the National Council of Young Israel joins our fellow member organizations of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, and all of American Jewry, in expressing our steadfast support for the State of Israel during the ongoing ‘Battle for Quiet.’ As Israel continues to defend itself against Hamas, a terrorist organization whose stated mission is to annihilate the Jewish State, we stand in solidarity with our Israeli brethren while they take the necessary steps to sustain quiet, security and stability in the region, and to safeguard their citizens and visitors.
“Hamas’ efforts to terrorize the people of Israel and put individuals in harm’s way – whether through the indiscriminate rocket fire, exploitation of ‘terror tunnels’ to wage warfare, or the use of civilians in Gaza as human shields – merits immediate condemnation from the international community, and we stand together with the American Jewish community in calling for the global outcry that Hamas’ despicable actions warrant.
“Through its militant actions and violent exploits, Hamas is directly responsible for impairing the ability of people of all faiths – whether Jewish, Christian, or Muslim – to make pilgrimages to the Holy Land and enjoy unfettered access to their religious sites. The Hamas assault on Israel is in essence an assault on people of all faiths.
“We urge our government to continue to strengthen its bond with the State of Israel to ensure the long-term security of its citizens.
“We continue to pray for the safety and well-being of the State of Israel, the brave men and women of the Israel Defense Forces, and our Israeli brethren throughout the Jewish State.”
For the past 102 years, the National Council of Young Israel has ably served the broader Jewish community. With more than 25,000 member families and nearly 200 branch synagogues throughout the United States, Canada, and Israel, the National Council of Young Israel is a multi-faceted organization that embraces Jewish communal needs and often takes a leading role in tackling the important issues that face the Jewish community in North America and Israel.
