‘Zoabi bill’ heads to Knesset House Committee

(Israel Hayom/Exclusive to The Ministerial Committee on Legislation voted on Sunday to present Habayit Hayehudi MK Ayelet Shaked’s “Zoabi bill” to the Knesset House Committee.

If passed, the legislation would allow the House Committee to impeach and potentially dismiss lawmakers for identifying with a terrorist organization or inciting racism. A two-thirds majority vote would be required to impeach such MKs, and the Supreme Court would have the final say over their dismissal.

The bill was drafted as a response to recent statements by Balad MK Hanin Zoabi, who said in a recent radio interview that the abductors of Israeli teens Gilad Shaer, Eyal Yifrach and Naftali Frenkel were not terrorists.

The bill’s brief explained that “to avoid an absurd situation that actually endangers the state and its citizens — when the foundation of Israel’s very existence as a Jewish and democratic state is questioned from within the Knesset through incitement, racism or support of the armed struggle [against Israel] — the law must be amended. Knesset members must be barred from acting contrary to the Basic Laws.”

    You would think this would be a no-brainer! A member of the gov’t promoting, supporting, siding with a terrorist organization seeking to destroy the very country it represents is the worst oxymoron imaginable!
