Why Fall Is The Best Time To Have Cosmetic Surgery
By Dr. Aviva Preminger, MD, MPH, FACS
Fall is here and there’s the beginning of a chill in the air. Summer seems to have come and gone too quickly. The stores are already showing the fall fashions and the Jewish holidays are never far away. So, how can you prep for fall when you want to put your best face—and waistline—forward in shul?
If you’re considering having a plastic surgery procedure, it might be best to consider having it in the fall. There are many reasons why autumn is considered the perfect time of year for cosmetic surgery, let’s talk about some of them.
While there’s nothing better than summer sun, let’s face it, it’s not fun to look in the mirror when your tan has faded, leaving in its place brown spots, fine lines, and drying. Fall is the ideal time to address these issues, though it is important to give your skin about two weeks to recover from sun exposure before embarking on a laser procedure (to reduce the risk of irregular pigmentation). IPL lasers are great at removing brown spots, and Fraxel (CO2) lasers are ideal for resurfacing skin and addressing fine lines. If the thought of lasers scares you, similar results can be achieved with a skin peel that involves application of a topical acid to resurface the skin. The great thing about resurfacing with lasers or peels is that it doesn’t have to involve a lot of downtime or recovery. Some people like a “one and done” result (think Samantha in “Sex and the City”), but others prefer a gentler approach that involves a series of less aggressive treatments that ultimately achieve a similar result. Microneedling is another great option for addressing stubborn lines.
Fall is also a perfect time to refresh your Botox and filler before the holidays. Botox is great for forehead lines, those “11” lines that can make you look angry even when you’re not, bunny lines around your nose, and crow’s feet around your eyes. Botox can also be used to make your lips look subtly fuller, help eliminate smoker’s lines around the mouth, and eliminate a gummy smile. Filler is great for diminishing deep tear troughs (dark circles), nasolabial folds (those “c shaped” smile lines), and those puppet or marionette lines extending downwards from the corners of the mouth. Filler can also be used to create fuller lips. A lot of people are afraid of looking like a duck with too much lip filler, but a small amount of filler applied correctly can soften the lips and help eliminate those lip creases that prevent your lipstick from going on smoothly. As we age, our faces lose volume, and the volume that remains tends to fall in the wrong place and create jowls. Cheek and jawline filler can help camouflage this problem.
Finally, fall is the right time to revisit your skincare routine. Now that the summer heat has dissipated, it’s time to start thinking about a heavier moisturizer for hydration to prevent wrinkle formation, and also a retinol or retinoic acid to help reduce fine lines. Your closet may not be the only thing that needs an upgrade this season! Scheduling your procedure in the autumn also gives you plenty of time to fully heal and show off your stunning results once summer comes back around. Let us help you achieve the look you need to feel confident and at your best with the most natural-looking results. I want to help you feel great about the way you look! n
