Educational Excellence With Fiscal Responsibility
By: Dr. Asher Mansdorf
My journey as a trustee, vice president, and president of the Lawrence Cedarhurst school board has been defined by both profound challenge and unwavering resolve. Together with my colleague and mentor Murray Forman, we have navigated a landscape where the stakes are as high as they are personal. Throughout our tenure, we have faced threats to our safety, both open and veiled, yet we have refused to let intimidation derail our mission.
Our mandate remains singular and clear. It is to chart a path that benefits every student in our community, whether they are public school students or attend private institutions. At the heart of this work lies a commitment to balancing quality education with rigorous fiscal soundness, ensuring our district remains vibrant for generations to come.
True public service requires a level of selflessness that subordinates personal ambition to the greater good. We have long held the conviction that the board’s primary responsibility is to the community, never to individual agendas. This philosophy informs our view of what constitutes a credible candidate for leadership.
A candidate who seeks a trustee position to achieve a narrow, personal goal lacks the fundamental rationale required for the seat. The board is a vessel for progress, not a platform for personal grievances.
Credibility is earned through engagement. A candidate who has never attended a school board meeting lacks a foundational understanding of our district’s complexities and has not yet demonstrated the prerequisite dedication to be seriously considered for such a vital role.
We are proud of the stability we have cultivated over the years. We have proven that even in a diverse environment, it is possible to lead with integrity while maintaining fiscal health. Our success is rooted in a relationship with the private school sector that is vigorous, healthy, and constant. By moving past the era of “silos,” we have created a dynamic where continuous dialogue ensures the needs of the entire community are addressed.
Our leadership is defined by the rare balance of fiscal discipline and physical progress. We have successfully maintained a flat tax levy for over a decade, providing much-needed stability for taxpayers, while simultaneously spearheading the most aggressive modernization of our public-school buildings in recent memory.
From the restoration of the historic auditorium and the updating of our athletic fields to the comprehensive air conditioning of the Broadway campus, we have ensured that our facilities reflect the high caliber of education our students receive. This spirit of collaboration, rooted in a commitment to the “greater good,” ensures that the entire community thrives.
Can more be done? Of course. A school district is not a static entity. It is a living part of a constantly changing legislative landscape. Each day brings a fresh set of mandates and educational hurdles. And with those challenges come new opportunities to innovate.
It is for this reason that Mr. Forman and I remain deeply motivated to continuing our service. We aren’t just “holding the line.” We are eager to build on the foundation we have established. Our extensive experience isn’t just a record of the past; it is the essential toolkit we use to navigate the complexities of the future. We are driven by a singular question. How can we further enhance the opportunities for all our children?
Leadership on this board is a sacred trust that requires a deep understanding of our history and a presence at the table long before the election cycle begins. We ask for the opportunity to continue this journey, putting the needs of the community above all else, to ensure that District 15 remains a place where every student, without exception, has the resources to excel.
