The Soundtrack Of A Generation

There are few things that unite the Jewish world quite like a great song. Long before algorithms told us what to listen to, a Jewish song earned its place the old-fashioned way.

One camp introduces it at a kumzitz. Another camp “borrows” it the following summer. A chazzan sneaks it into davening. Someone sings it under the chuppah. The band plays it at every wedding for the next five years. Before long, every yeshiva dorm, every seminary, every Shabbos table, and every car with a stack of CDs has adopted it as its own.

Then one day you catch yourself singing it while pushing a shopping cart through Seasons or Gourmet Glatt or waiting in line at Kol Save, and you realize it didn’t just become popular. It became part of Jewish life.

As we emerge from Tishah B’Av and begin the comforting weeks that lead us toward Elul, it feels like the perfect time to celebrate one of the greatest gifts our community has produced over the past quarter century: its music.

Over the next several weeks, I’ll be counting down what I believe are the most iconic and viral Jewish songs released since 2000.

Notice what I didn’t say. Not the greatest songs. Not the most technically brilliant compositions. Not necessarily the songs with the best vocals, arrangements, or production. Those are worthy discussions, but they’re different discussions. This list is about impact. These are the songs that escaped the speakers and became part of our lives. The ones that transcended albums and concerts to become part of the soundtrack of the Jewish people. Songs that found their way into wedding halls, yeshivos, girls’ schools, camps, family road trips, melaveh malkas, siyumim, Shabbos tables, and yes, the occasional camp kumzitz that somehow lasted until 2:00 in the morning.

Some inspired us. Some comforted us. Some became anthems for an entire generation. And a select few achieved something incredibly rare. They became bigger than the artists who recorded them. You didn’t have to know who sang them. You just knew every word.

Putting this list together was considerably more difficult than I expected.

First, I limited myself to songs released since 2000. Then I wrestled with one question over and over: What does “iconic” really mean?

Is it longevity? Popularity? The number of weddings it’s been sung at? How many camps adopted it? Whether it could instantly turn a circle of twenty people into a circle of two hundred?

The answer, of course, is somewhere in the middle of all of those. To make matters even more complicated, everyone has an opinion.

I’ve already had spirited debates with friends, family members, neighbors, and complete strangers who somehow caught wind of this project. I’ve been told certain songs are ranked too high, others far too low, and at least one person informed me that if a particular song doesn’t make the Top 10, I should immediately retire from making lists.

The series hadn’t even begun. Naturally, I thanked everyone for their thoughtful feedback… and changed absolutely nothing.

One important note before we begin: this list is intentionally subjective. If we were all going to agree from #10 through #1, there wouldn’t be much reason to publish it. My hope is that you’ll smile, reminisce, occasionally shake your head in disagreement, and maybe even text a friend to ask, “How on earth did he leave that song off?”

That conversation is part of the fun.
