Albany, NY — In light of the ongoing negotiations for a so-called ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, New York State Assemblyman Ari Brown (R-Cedarhurst) issued the following statement today, calling attention to the temporary and dangerous nature of these negotiations.
“The so-called ‘ceasefire’ being negotiated between Israel and Hamas is nothing more than a temporary and dangerous illusion,” said Assemblyman Brown. “History has shown us that, with one exception—the peace agreement with Egypt—terrorist groups like Hamas have never honored a ceasefire for long. These groups, backed by Iran and many Arab nations, do not seek peace. They openly call for the destruction of Israel, the Jewish people and even America, which they refer to as the ‘Big Satan.’”
Assemblyman Brown acknowledged the emotional weight of the situation, emphasizing his deep empathy for the families of hostages. However, he stressed the broader consequences of negotiating with terrorists.
“This is not an easy position for me to take. I do not have someone close to me being held hostage, and I would do anything to bring them home. I understand the pain of families waiting for their loved ones to return, and I empathize with their suffering. But we must consider the broader consequences of negotiating with those who have proven time and again that they cannot be trusted,” Brown continued.
Drawing from past negotiations, Assemblyman Brown warned that releasing terrorists only emboldens them. In 2011, Israel freed more than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for a single soldier, Gilad Shalit, a move that ultimately perpetuated the cycle of violence and put more hostages at risk.
“Negotiating with terrorists has consequences. Every time we make such concessions, we risk emboldening those who wish to harm us. We must stand firm and prioritize long-term security over short-term solutions that enable more violence,” Brown said.
Assemblyman Brown expressed strong support for the return of President Donald Trump to office, asserting that his leadership would ensure a firm stance against terror and a commitment to ending the cycle of violence.
“I believe that when President Trump returns to office, it will be a game-changer. His leadership will take a firm stand against terrorism, securing the release of hostages without making dangerous deals that fuel more violence,” concluded Assemblyman Brown.
