On May 14, five students from Yeshiva University High School for Girls – Central Science Institute traveled with their instructor, Jason Williams, to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, considered by many to be the home of molecular biology.
During the trip, students visited the DNA Learning Center to conduct final laboratory work using DNA barcoding. Barcoding is a technique used to identify the species of unknown organisms using genetic markers in their DNA.
The students also met with female scientists from Cold Spring Harbor’s WISE group (Women in Science and Engineering), and had
an informal discussion on career paths in science and what it’s really like to be a scientist. The day finished with a tour of the laboratory facilities.
