Qatar, Trump, and the Wrong Truth
By: Larry Gordon
It is frankly not believable that neither President Trump nor the Qataris knew what Israel was up to this past Tuesday morning. Someone in the White House or State Department had to develop a narrative about what they knew and when they knew it. The stories were patched together rather poorly.
We are supposed to believe, as Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said, that the U.S. military communicated with the president that Israel was about to bomb a building in Doha where Hamas’ billionaire officials were meeting about how to proceed with their plan to torture and kill Jews.
When Trump was briefed about the Israeli plan, he allegedly summoned his special negotiator, Steve Witkoff, to tell the Qatari leadership what was about to unfold. Then—as the story goes—Trump called Prime Minister Netanyahu to ask him what he thought he was up to. Netanyahu probably responded that he was in the midst of eliminating most Hamas’ wealthy leaders who live in great opulence and have been supported by Qatar since at least 2011.
Bibi was willing to take the fall and Trump was able to say that he knew nothing about the Israeli plan. No satellites were able to detect 15 Israeli Air Force jets headed in the direction of Doha. Was it an air show? A military exercise? No one seems to know.
Trump then allegedly called the Emir of Qatar and assured His Highness that Israeli violations of Qatari airspace will never happen again. Does anyone wonder how the president can possibly know that will never happen again? Maybe Israel will want to finish off a few more Hamas savages that they missed during the first run, but this time, won’t tell Trump until after the deed is done. At that point, Trump will have to apologize again and assure His Highness that it will never happen again, swearing on the life of Ismail Haniyeh. I’d buy into that.
Did anyone notice that after almost two years of Israel eviscerating and dismantling Hamas in Gaza, not one Arab country has come to the aid of the Palestinians? Just a side note, the Iranians might be Muslims, but they are not Arabs. Same goes for the Turks. So, whether it is Doha or Riyadh or Abu Dhabi, while the Arabs might issue statements in support of Hamas and Gaza, in the end, they are carefully-worded, meaningless declarations of support that will end up in the dustbin of history.
The Trump statement on the Israeli bombing run to eliminate the billionaire Hamas leaders was curious in and of itself. Trump stated that, unfortunately, the terrorist leaders were located in Qatar, an ally and friend of the U.S. I hope they don’t change their minds about that $400 million plane they were going to gift the Department of Defense—now renamed the War Department.
At the same time, Trump reiterated that the goal to eliminate the Hamas leadership was a “worthy goal.” But for now, Israel should stop—that is, until the next time.
It’s difficult to find the truth in any of these statements, either by Qatar or Trump. But then again, what does the truth have to do with any of this? The primary objective is to rid the world of terrorists. I think Trump was trying to say it is a superb idea.
