Preparing for Yom Kippur with OU-Certified Hydration Products
By: Gary Magder
As Yom Kippur approaches, preparing for the fast is about more than planning the seudas hamafsekes. Proper hydration in the days and hours before the fast can help people enter Yom Kippur prepared for the 25-hour fast ahead.
For those who use hydration or electrolyte products as part of their routine, the OU certifies hundreds of hydration products, including ready-to-drink beverages, powders, and other electrolyte products.
Don’t Wait Until Erev Yom Kippur. One of the best ways to prepare for the fast is to begin hydrating before Erev Yom Kippur. Rather than trying to drink an excessive amount of water immediately before the fast begins, it is generally better to drink consistently throughout the preceding day and, when possible, the days leading up to Yom Kippur. Water-rich foods such as fruits and vegetables can also contribute to overall fluid intake.
Those who regularly drink coffee, tea, or other caffeinated beverages should also keep in mind that abruptly stopping caffeine can contribute to headaches and discomfort during the fast. Gradually reducing caffeine consumption before Yom Kippur may help minimize withdrawal symptoms.
What About Electrolytes? Hydration is not only about water. Electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium play important roles in maintaining the body’s fluid balance, as well as supporting normal nerve and muscle function.
For most healthy people, electrolytes are obtained through a regular diet. Hydration and electrolyte products can provide an additional source of fluids and electrolytes, particularly for those who have been exercising, sweating heavily, or losing fluids.
For those who choose to use these products before the fast, checking the kosher certification is an important part of preparation.
OU-Certified Hydration Products. Every year, the OU Kosher Hotline receives questions about the kosher status of hydration and electrolyte products, particularly around Yom Kippur and other fast days.
With hundreds of products carrying OU certification, consumers have a wide range of options. These include ready-to-drink beverages as well as powdered products that can be mixed with water.
As always, consumers should look for the OU symbol on the product and check the certification carefully, since formulations and certifications can change.
