Bibi in DC
By: Larry Gordon
Prime Minister Netanyahu is in DC for two days this week and will return to Israel on Friday morning. He was in DC for a tête-à-tête with President Trump regarding the Iranian nuclear threat. And there is plenty to talk about on the future of Gaza as well.
Obviously, there are things that can only be said in person, without relying on intermediaries or electronic communication. It seems that Netanyahu and Israeli leaders are not completely satisfied with the way Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner have been handling negotiations on the matter of Iran or for that matter, Gaza.
Witkoff and Kushner need to deliver success for Trump. Netanyahu, on the other hand, must do his utmost to protect Israel from further attack. The discussion this week has to be where the two sides conflict.
It’s a tough time with a fully armed U.S. fleet within striking distance of Iran. Trump said more than a few times that he was on the verge of obliterating the Iranian leadership and freeing its people, only to succumb to Gulf Arab pressure and once again enter negotiations.
Despite the importance of the negations, due to the tragic story surrounding the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, there was hardly room for even one mention of this story on networks like Fox or CNN. It was all Guthrie all the time.
Had Trump decided to hit Iran this week, it would have been a side note on the news. I hope Guthrie is found safe and sound, but each passing day dims the nature of that hopefulness.
And don’t think Israel is waiting for the 5TJT to make these observations or editorialize on these matters. Israel took out some high-profile terrorists both in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon. It went mostly unreported in the news. No room. No time.
On the Witkoff-Kushner talks, the Iranians love these types of meetings because they never have to admit to anything or tell the truth. They know that Obama and Biden fell for their stories, but Trump is supposed to be different.
Let’s see. Let’s hope.
