Why Winter Is The Perfect Time For Plastic Surgery
By B. Aviva Preminger, MD, MPH, FACS
By the time this article is printed, we will likely be approximately six weeks away from Pesach. Coincidentally, this is about the amount of time required for a full recovery from most plastic surgery procedures. Yeshiva break is in the rear-view mirror, and it is time to hunker down for a bit before the next holiday and school break. If you are planning a procedure, this may be the perfect window.
Most plastic surgery procedures require several weeks for swelling to resolve and for results to begin to look natural and refined. Scheduling surgery in the winter allows patients to recover fully and enjoy their results in time for spring celebrations such as graduations and weddings, and summer—without rushing the healing process.
Surgeons’ postoperative recovery recommendations are generally based on how long it takes a wound to gain tensile strength and tolerate mechanical stress. While some procedures involve a shorter recovery, things like heavy lifting and returning to the gym may take up to six weeks. You usually need at least two weeks for sun exposure after IPL lasers to treat brown spots, and 2–3 weeks to be able to swim. This timing is precisely why winter is such an ideal season to consider aesthetic surgery. When planned thoughtfully, winter procedures allow patients to heal fully and feel their best just in time for spring and summer.
As temperatures drop and layers come out, winter quietly becomes one of the most strategic—and often overlooked—seasons for plastic surgery. While many people associate aesthetic procedures with summer preparation, the colder months actually offer several unique advantages for both surgical and non-surgical treatments.
Cooler weather is kinder to the healing process. Swelling is often easier to manage in colder temperatures, and patients are generally more comfortable recovering without heat, humidity, or excessive sweating. Winter clothing naturally accommodates compression garments and post-operative dressings, making recovery more discreet and comfortable. Some plastic surgery procedures also require drains, which are much easier to hide under a bulky sweater or sweatshirt.
Winter tends to be a quieter season socially. Wedding season still seems far off. With fewer outdoor events and more time spent indoors, many patients find it easier to schedule recovery without disruption. Coats, scarves, and sweaters make it simple to conceal swelling or dressings during the early healing phase, allowing patients to maintain privacy as they recover.
Winter is particularly well-suited for skin-focused procedures such as laser treatments, chemical peels, and other resurfacing therapies. Shorter days and reduced sun exposure lowers the risk of pigmentation issues and allows the skin to regenerate more safely and predictably.
Sun exposure can also negatively impact scar healing, causing scars to darken or become more noticeable. During winter, when skin is naturally covered and UV exposure is reduced, scars are better protected, often leading to improved long-term outcomes.
The winter months encourage reflection, rest, and self-care. Choosing to undergo plastic surgery during this season is often less about immediate visibility and more about long-term confidence, wellness, and thoughtful planning.
Successful plastic surgery is as much about timing as it is about technique. Winter offers the luxury of planning—allowing patients to heal properly, follow post-operative instructions carefully, and let results develop naturally without external pressure.
The takeaway: Winter is not just a time to bundle up, it is an ideal season to reset, recover, and invest in yourself. With Pesach and spring on the horizon, winter surgery can offer smoother healing, greater privacy, and beautifully timed results for the months ahead. And, if you do feel the need to hide during the recovery process, Purim provides the perfect opportunity for a disguise!
